Summer months tend to bring out road trippers. Whether you are visit Napa Valley, Bodega Bay, Half Moon Bay or other Bay Area attractions, it is important to keep a focus on safety while you are behind the wheel. To cut down on summer accidents, we offer the following tips.

TEXTING – NO!

Texting while driving is not only against the law, it is extremely dangerous. Nine Americans are killed every day in accidents caused by a texting driver.

KEEP YOUR HANDS ON THE WHEEL

It is against the law to use handheld cellphones while driving. California allows the utilization of a hands free component, such as blue tooth devices, for your cell phone. However, you must be over the age of 18 to use a hands free device while operating a motor vehicle.

SOBER DRIVING ONLY

Never get behind the wheel after having too much alcohol. Assign a designated driver at the beginning of your evening, call a friend for a ride, or hail a taxi, UBER or Lyft.

GET YOUR REST

Make sure you are rested when you climb behind the wheel, especially when it comes to road trips and driving vacations. When you feel tired, pull over in a safe place and take a nap.

PRESCRIBED MEDICATION

Pay close attention to the side effects of your medications and if in doubt steer clear of operating a motor vehicle. Heavy medications and driving is dangerous and doing so puts yourself and others in danger, so get another person to drive you.

WATCH OUT FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS

Being aware of everything around you while you are driving is very important. Paying special attention to pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders, children, animals and elderly drivers is especially important. Give them the right of way at intersections, crosswalks and bicycle lanes. When you see an elderly driver who is driving slower than you’d prefer, slow down and have patience.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORCYCLES

The number of motorcyclists, mopeds and motorized pedestrians rises during the summer months so always to double and triple check for others as you change lanes, open your vehicle door, back up or enter an intersection.

KEEP YOUR WINDOWS CLEAN

Dirty windows are difficult to see through. Wash your car windows for clear visibility and add water repellant to make your driving easier.
